  2. Hi there Ultima PSO players! My name's Wes and I'm a writer at PC Gamer. A couple months back I interviewed Larva for an article I've had brewing for awhile, about the fanservers like Ultima keeping PSO alive. I've played on the server a few times and am always a little in awe of how nice and welcoming people are. It's a community worth celebrating! So, as part of my article, I'd like to include a few stories from members here. If you're comfortable sharing your age, that'd be great--I'm curious how old you were if you played PSO on consoles back in the day! Some prompts: Why are you playing PSO now? Nostalgia? Do you like it more than contemporary MMOs? DO you play with friends? Has anyone been playing continuously since the Dreamcast or GameCube days? If you played PSO back in the old days, what made you love it then? Do you still feel the same now, or enjoy it for different reasons? Have you made lasting friendships/relationships through PSO? How has PSO impacted your life in the most meaningful way? What's your weirdest PSO memory? Does anyone play today with that wonderfully absurd GameCube keyboard controller? (I imagine there's some way to get it working on PC) -- Thanks in advance, y'all

  3. Considering that most stuff cannot hit Deldepths well even with vanilla stats (unless they are frozen), Fyrewolf's example is also not great because Slicers can use the "SNS glitch" which allows you to get a special attack with the accuracy of a normal attack. "SSN" is a similar one for where even a second normal attack will not work. There's also a massive difference between "it can connect" and "it rarely connects". Just because something can hit doesn't mean it's fair.

  4. I like the new changes as ultimate actually feels like ultimate now. The problem is actually players that think they know how the game works because they have played for a long time. Every zone should not be a walk in the park. There are certain things players need to know to make their journey in ultimate as smooth as possible. Things like equipping smartlink on a HU or battle FO that use ranged weapons. Can't stress how important that is above maxing out your ata. FO using techs to stunlock enemies rather than to do the highest dps option. The biggest I see is shifta deband jellen and zalure not being used, casts not using traps, rangers not using spread / arrest needle and wondering why they get rekd. I used to play on schtserv also and I don't see your argument about snow queen on ill gills. That has always been a bad idea. The reason being is because they move around so much they manually evade. Frozen shooter was always the better option since your first shot was to stun the ill gill and the second to freeze it. Snow queen is better used in instances where you have gee spawn infront of mericarol & Co and the gee acts like a personal shield taking all of the frozen shooter bullets.

  8. I think people are too obsessed with having stuff at 80 hit in the first place when it's really not needed, wanting to be able to land hards and specials on first attacks when it's often a bad idea anyway. Not to mention that a lot of people aren't interested in learning to do special-normal and special-normal-special combo glitching. I've thought a lot about the mechanics changes in this game, and I think really the biggest hurdle is not actually the high dfp and evp. I think the biggest and most impacting change is really the monster speed. This increases the chances of your attacks being manually evaded ,so if your timing is off a lot you might just think you need more hit on your weapon. People just need to learn game mechanics better. People can say all they want about hit and all that being an issue but that is just a crutch, some real problems here? using divine punishment as a cast, it brings shame to our community(and yur families) and people generally not knowing the strengths of their classes. Not knowing about dmc, not knowing how to be a tech casting force in a place where forces don't do much damage. Also way too many times I've seen people jumping into ultimate when they really aren't ready, personally when I started on this server I didn't feel comfortable in ultimate until around mid-120s. As far as nerfing everything to make monsters stronger? I mean, maybe if you made your own new server? personally that's the kind of stuff I quit games over, and I would permanently lose all trust in this server to not fuck with how the game plays. Now I love the idea of you breaking the hp limits in your new server because I think to have the option to buff some bosses to make them truly difficult for events but I think doing a complete change of this server, what like 9 years in? is crazy, this server has been really successful, and I am not saying this is what WOULD happen but it turning into ghost town COULD happen pretty quickly. Not to mention a lot of this could be fixed with quest developement, which we have some really cool people working on lately.

  10. S-ranks, maybe not atp but more ata would be nice, especially considering the buffed mobs on this server Claws, I mean, have you ever seriously used a claw? you could make like a 1600 atp zerk claw and it still not be broken, still just a claw, but none are even close to that, neis claw is pretty cool but huney only, would be cool if all females could use it or something, would be neat on a foney. Also kind of getting into foolish stuff here, similar to claw really, but something else that is not used but happens to have a really cool model, hammers

  11. So, I've been wanting to address this topic for quite a while now.. this entire post is going to be rough drafted so bare with me if anything sounds disorganized and if anything offends you I apologize. So to start, let me preface this topic with this little statement: I am completely neutral about this entire thing. With that out of the way, we can start; If you didn't know, or don't currently know what I'm talking about regarding monster stats, Ultima has increased ultimate mode monster stats. Basically, they upped the EVP and elemental resistances of monsters. I believe the elemental resistances are specifically for Episode 2 monsters only but the EVP boost to all monsters seems to be for every single Episode. I presume the reasoning behind this change was because of a few factors; one of which being that Ultima was basically just another generic server when it first released and what I assume to be a way to differentiate itself from the pack of other generic PSOBB servers they made monsters significantly harder to hit in multiplayer (not in solo mode -- to my knowledge, the EVP boost only affects multiplayer modes). The other reason (I'm just assuming) might be because with the way that you can get every weapon's hit values up to 80% due to donation, there should be some type of drawback behind being able to "casually" (and I say that word very carefully) obtain 80 hit on any weapon you wanted. I'm on the fence about this change to be honest. On one hand, you have the really hard to hit monsters as it were. Take a look at Episode 2 multiplayer mode for instance. That Episode in particular already had high EVP enemy stats so if you didn't have maximum ATA stats on your characters (or inherently low maximum stats in ATA on specific characters (cough HUcast cough)) you had a hard enough time hitting them as it was. I'm going to use schthack as an example for this, since it's the easiest one to use. in Schthack, there's no additional EVP monster buff, which inherently keeps the same sort of difficulty early on when you don't have max ATA but when you did get max ATA you were kind of rewarded for it and rewarded for having decent hit weapons (something like 40-50 hit stuff would work great). Like for example, on a max ATA RAmarl on Schthack, with a 40 hit Snow Queen, I could always like 80% of the time freeze that Ill Gill. It was a pretty high chance. If I tried that here, at Ultima, with the same 40 hit Snow Queen, I would have a somewhat 10-20%~ chance. Significantly lower chances at hitting that, and that's a special attack that hits the same enemy twice (potentially). This is also compounded by the fact that this EVP buff honestly basically requires you to have 80 hit on every weapon. Like I don't even think that's an arguable point anymore because if 80 hit truly wasn't necessary with max ATA on Episode 2, people would honestly not be wasting their money adding in extra hit past like 50 hit. But its painfully clear that 80 hit is required for pretty much every weapon you have, especially melee ones (regarding Episode 2, at least). But then, playing devils advocate here, getting 80 hit on every weapon is seemingly pretty damn easy to achieve now. So when you have all these people running around with 80 hit weapons how do you make the game more interesting without breaking the game? You increase EVP stats... but this is the only argument I could really think of after a few months of really giving it some thought and it doesn't even really come to a reasonable counter-argument or example of why we even have it here in the first place. Like, yeah, we release some pretty ridiculous weapons over our time period. Excluding Dark weapons, Hundred Souls is pretty crazy. Imagine only really needing 50 hit on every Hundred Souls to always hit things on Episode 2 with a special attack. That sounds really dumb on paper when you think about it I guess, having these crazy super powerful weapons ATP wise that can burn through health bars crazy fast, how do you counter? You make it harder to hit enemies. But again, that's really the only issue I find and it's really only with Episode 2 for the most part. Because when you go into Episode 1 and 4 I don't think you experience the sort of same issue as you do in Episode 2. I think it's painfully clear that Episode 1 and 4 are really easy in comparison to Episode 2. And that would be okay if they didn't add in the EVP boost to Episode 2 because enemies in Episode 2 were already hard to hit without it and definitely without max ATA stats. I feel like the game kind of rewarded you for hitting max stats in Episode 2 by allowing you to somewhat frequently hit enemies with any kind of attack without needing ludicrous amounts of hit on weapons to do so. Now, you hit max stats, and that's like half the issue solved. Now, in addition, you have to add 80 hit to all your weapons and then go into Episode 2 to hit stuff. If you're even missing like 10% hit on anything you've put yourself at a huge disadvantage. I think ultimately my point is this: I don't feel like for whatever reason the EVP boost to monsters was implemented by, it's kind of pigeon holding people into having to get 80 hit on everything. To be honest, I'd like to spend a lot less of my money on 80 hit and leave my weapons at more like 40-50 hit and then only have to worry about getting my stats maxed out. I shouldn't need 80 hit on everything to be able to operate under a reasonable level in Episode 2. I say Episode 2 specifically because it's the only Episode that this argument applies to for the most part. Maybe we could remove the EVP boost on Episode 2 monsters and that way it wont be so difficult on us who don't have 80 hit on everything? Or maybe remove the EVP boost altogether.. because honestly... as far as I can tell, there's no really much of a point in having it anymore...

  13. Normal attacks are affected by hit %, why wouldn't it be? All three attacks work off the same formula, but normal is 1.0 ATA, hard is 0.7 ATA and special is 0.5 ATA. (1.0/1.3/1.69 for the 1/2/3 combo as well) Personally though, I just see Ultima as its own thing, and just play elsewhere for a more balanced/vanilla-like experience. PS: I would personally not recommend making techs do decent damage on Episode 2 enemies at all. I think it is far more interesting that a different approach towards enemies has to be taken as FO, instead of just being able to brain-dead nuke like the other 2 episodes.

  16. i joined this server in early 2015 and made alot of good friends here who i still talk to long after they have left this server via skype or texts/calls as they are some of my better friends even considering my friends who live near me and i dont think i would have met these great people without this place and am really glad my brother showed me this game back in early 2000s or else i wouldnt have joined ultima or met these great friends as for responses to your questions more acuratly with bullet point . i play pso now for both nostalgia and talking with friends often in lobby and havent really liked other mmos as much as this one .i have indeed been playing since it released on gamecube (brother got it day 1 of release and we played multiplayer on it for years untill he moved out) . i loved it then because i got to spend alot of time with my brother playing something we both enjoyed (still play on gamecube when he visits) but as for ultima i enjoy it for the new friends so not really sure if the same or difrent reason to be honest . i have made atleast 2 dozen lasting friendships through pso alone . pso has given me a place to come to talk to friends when im feeling down if i cant get ahold to go out with irl friends to get me off the down thoughts as either works for that . my weirdest memory in pso has to be when i was talking to @Auli'i in lobby about her and @KarmaTheFoney getting engaged and i asked about the ceramonial positions and how karmas brother was the best man so i jokingly asked to be the maid of honor and auli'i agreed so now i get to be the maid of honor at their wedding despite being a man oh edit because i missed the age bit: im 21 now and i started back in gamecube days when i was either 6 or 7 i dont remember the exact day it came out just the year being 02 so its one of those 2 shouting out to me and saying you have no weird memories. pls i all give you are weird memories lad

  18. The term is pigeon hole, not hold. I know, grammar is a minute detail in such a topic, but if that wasn't a typo and you used that term in person one day someone is gonna call you a fucking idiot, so I'm just helping you out. Anyways, the game's balanced like garbage in the first place so I really don't care. The only sort of annoying thing is trying to melee on a fucking FO on ep2.

  21. I'm sure there should be some flag I can force change to disable the picking up of items but so far I haven't found a way to either do that, or to disable the picking up (while preserving the attack keys). And talking about this, I got an idea that I'll be looking up soon. I also want to enable the alternate hotkey (1-0) when using keyboard but haven't had any luck yet. What you can do is put the attack you use the most in the left key of the palette so you start the combos with the left key, once in a combo, you won't pick up items (that's what I do).

Like i said, i only want to slap this RRR hucaseal butt ( and maybe patrick as well but i give up with chris, i don't have any chance ). Btw, i find it ironical that you're speaking of "letting chance to others" when you didn't let any chance to my PC to stand your magic hacking spell ( even my boot and recovery system are crushed, you're too strong magic queen ) but fortunately, i've found a way to be back soon and you won't be able to do anything against me then

I'm curious what weapons everyone wishes were stronger without upgrade (not counting grinders for upgrade). So, what 3 weapons would do you wish were naturally stronger? This is probably going to be a three part question ;-P

  29. Hi there, A friend of mine and I just made the spontaneous decision to play this - we are both around 31 now, but when we were kids, we played the US release of PSO on Dreamcast every other day after school and we even imported "Version 2" when the Japanese one came out because my mother worked at a local video game store at the time, and we had a blast for a long, long time. Unfortunately, we never really made it too far into the Gamecube "Episode 1 and 2" that came out, so a ton of the content in this game that was part of that version was lost to me, but I still remember some of the things I loved, which is mostly summed up in Last Survivor turning into a giant combat knife, and the updated combat animations for some weapon+class types (I hated the sword attacks the male hunters used in PSO DC, but I liked how it looked in the GCN one) - all of that stuff was cool. So fast-forward around....14 years, and we're trying to figure this out. On that note, I'd like to first express my gratitude to whomever it is that makes this possible, since after reading various forum threads and guides, I've come to learn that a good deal more than just hosting a server is going on here, and for that I salute you. Second, I tried looking for one, but I couldn't find like a good, definitive, terms-defined guide for completely ignorant new players. Now I don't mean clueless about the game or the basic mechanics and buttons (still can't get my wireless elite controller to work, but that's for another day) but some of the server features and other things. So, I noticed there's a boosted xp rate - is that just always on and it doesn't matter how you're playing/what episode/or "one-person" mode? Two, what content exactly is in this version of the game, is it up to the Dreamcast "Version 2" or does it contain the Gamecube release's content too, or was there some completely different set of content for the PC version? Finally, I somewhat recall how to progress through the game and unlock the additional areas, but I can't exactly remember the game-flow, is there somewhere I can read all of this or is any guide of general applicability from the past usable? Thank you all for forming a community around this and my gratitude to anyone who has any information, I do apologize if I'm just blind and missed an obvious "completely clueless new player" post.

  31. I first played this game on Gamecube back when I was around 7 or 8 years old (2002 or so). I fell in love with it and dumped countless hours playing by myself. I suppose what made me love it so much was the fact that it was babby's first RPG for me. The mechanics are dated as fuck now, but what makes me still play it is the simplicity. It's easy to get into, the graphics are honestly still surprising sometimes considering the game is 17 years old, the soundtrack is legit and the online experience is a once in a lifetime thing. Around 2008 I discovered SCHTserv and experienced the joy of playing this game online. It seriously cranked the fun up from like 8/10 to 11/10. Years passed and I found myself on Ultima around 2014. Here is where I learned to play the game properly and not like an idiot. It seriously fucked me up how I was still so noob after all those years. Over the years I've made some intense connections with some of these players. One of my dude's Jason I met on this game. I've consistently kept up with him ever since 08. A lot of this game is nostalgia, even nostalgia for some of the old people I used to play with. However, looking past that, I'm still able to see there has been some truly special moments in my career of playing this game that are more than just infatuation. Play this god damn game before you die.

  32. I suppose I'm posting here now too. I'm 19, started here on Ultima when I was 17. Similar to Mud, I had primarily watched the game prior to joining Ultima, but had played it a few times on the Dreamcast and also the GameCube. I do also enjoy PSO on Ultima more than most or all other MMOs that I've played I only joined Ultima originally because of my Fiance, @KarmaTheFoney. He kept prodding me to try it out, until I got fed up with his begging and did it. Haven't looked back since then. The only thing that really keeps me on Ultima these days (although recently I've had a little break for various reasons) is the people. And not just any people, but specifically the people that MudkipzJM mentioned and a few more I hate to do this to everybody else, but when it comes to the lasting relationships that I've made on Ultima, only one sticks out. @mudkipzjm has really become a great friend of mine. I cherish our friendship and our time spent talking/playing PSO/whatever else we may be doing. If it weren't for Mud, I -might- be on Ultima still, but chances are I would have left by now As for how PSO has affected my life, I think it goes right back to the same topic I've been rambling on about thus far. I've made friends that affect my life outside of PSO, and that I think about regardless of where I am or what I'm doing. To take it to a bit of a darker place, I was very sick for 8-9 months, and only recently got better. The people I know on Ultima (along with @KarmaTheFoney) are probably the only reason I'm actually still here at all. Their words gave me hope, and that hope stuck with me. I cannot thank them enough for that As for my weirdest PSO memory, this one is easy. A player that used to play on Ultima (Zanraizer/Atro) and I had an interesting thing happen to us while in game. We were doing CCA to get his FOmarl to level 200, and I was using his RAcast's gear (Iron Faust and Yasminkov 9000m). The server crashed at one point, and upon relogging, I found that his gear wasn't in my inventory, nor was it in his RAcast's. Also, I had gear from his RAcast bank that he never withdrew or touched. Later on, we found out that the gear was on a totally different character in THEIR bank. It really confused the two of us, and also scared us momentarily because the gear was just totally gone -Auli'i

  33. I actually started out new here, having only watched my brother play it on GameCube when I was around 7-8 years old. I had to struggle when I first began to learn the basic mechanics that a lot of new-comers had already learned. I'm still playing PSO because there's that drive to get better stuff/improve myself that I always have, plus I have some friends that make playing this game even more fun. I have made a lot of friends here, most of which I talk to on a regular basic(shoutouts to @KarmaTheFoney, @Auli'i, @McLaughlin86, @griffeni, @Lone Ranger, @ultrajerky, and @Sabrina. I've known all of these people for over a year now, some of them almost a year and a half.). I wouldn't say I have any particularly weird memories. Just people acting strange and me just ignoring them/reporting them.

  37. To be honest, I thought we had a "acronyms" thread, but I can't find it now. Were there any in particular you wanted to know? Most people will be more than willing to explain any that you don't know. But here's a short list off the top of my head that you'll see quite often. DF - Dark Flow (weapon) DM - Dark Meteor (weapon) TTF - Towards the Future (quest) TTFU - Towards the Future Ultima (quest [custom]) RT - Respective Tomorrow (quest) CCA - Central Control Area (area) PTS - Path to Salvation (quest [custom]) WOI - World of Illusion (quest [custom]) WOF - Wrath of Forest (quest [custom]) PD - Photon Drop (item) DTS - Donation Ticket (donated currency, roughly equivalent to 6.6pd. Or 15 USD = 15 dts = 99 pd if that helps) PC - Photon Crystal (item) PS - Photon Sphere (item, equivalent to 99 pd) PB - Photon Booster (item) POST - Proof of Sonic Team (item [custom?]) FS - Frozen Shooter (weapon) FT - Freeze Trap (trap) IF - Iron Faust (weapon) DLS - Daylight Scar (weapon) STA - Sonic Team Armour (armour [customish]) WD - Wedding Dress (armour) RR - Red Ring (shield) ep# - episode # where # is 1,2 or 4 PPP - Power Plant Plight (quest [custom]) BBB - Brutal Barnz Blight (quest [custom]) TTT - The Tentacular Truth 9Quest [custom]) CCC - CAL's Clock Challenge (quest [custom]) R# - Battle Rule Set # These aren't always capitalized, and some rarely are. You'll pick up on most of them just from talking with people, but never be scared to ask. Most people would rather type a little more to be understood than to talk to someone who isn't really listening. As for content, PSOv2 had up to ep1, PSO I&II had up to ep2, and they introduced ep4 in PSOBB which this server hosts for. Episode 3 was it's own game on the gamecube. There are tons of new weapons that you'll never have seen before that appear in Sega's PSOBB. The server also offers tons of new features on top of that such as custom items (3 more were just added last event), server commands (accessible via the top bar at ultima > toolbox > commands) to change how you interact with the game, and custom quests to keep things fresh (CCC was just added like a week ago). The best way to learn about in-game content is to play. The more you explore beyond what you'd normally do the more you'll learn about the game it's content. On the forums, my advice is to go through the top bar and look at all those pages. There's lots of good stuff up there that most people don't bother to find, and are worse off because of it. For example, the complete drop table is up there. There's a max stats calculator is up there. There's a tool to let you view your bank and inventory offline up there. There's a full list of in-game items and what they do. And lots of other cool things. The boosted exp rate is global, and will apply to any game you made. That being said, you can use the server command "/exp #" to reduce the exp rate if you wish to level at a lower rate than the max for your level. Those limits were outlined earlier by @JanenbaDMS. See the server commands link above for the # values you can enter and what they do. I think the best advice I can give you is to become part of the community. You only get out of something as much as you put into it. The more you play and make friends, the better time you'll have here. Don't be a stranger! (There are no strangers, only friends you haven't met yet) Also, thanks for the salute. We put a lot of volunteer hours into trying to make this place the best place to play, and it's really nice to have that acknowledged.

  38. https://www.phantasystaronline.net/forum/index.php?/tool-box/calculators/section-id/ also, any name will only display 9 characters in game (i.e. BabyKezia123 would show up as BabyKezia in game). use that to your advantage. you can also use spaces and stuff

  39. Yes this exactly. I didn't play a single second during the holidays as I'd rather spend it with my family.
