Should governments be allowed to immediately take down sites hosted within their country that they deem to have illegal material on them?

Should they be allowed to force ISPs within their country to place blocks on those sites with illegal material on them that are hosted outside their country?

As for the material, anything that they may deem is worth taking down/removing -- it would vary country to country.

That is what the third option is for. Could you give some examples of what you may consider justifiable instances of censorship and examples of the opposite?

Or are you essentially saying that some countries should be allowed to because of how they are structured, while others should not be allowed to?

The poll is meant mainly for people who feel strongly one way or the other. I hoped it would encourage people to elaborate and explain their opinions in more detail inside the thread if they were so inclined to.

Censoring is in the end pretending something is not there.... when obviously it is, and from what I have seen censorship nowadays is done in such

a way... you can tell the dont even invest money into properly censoring stuff!

by classifying, not only can you tell what you're dealing with but once classified you can either do the following

say add a warning before entering a site that can be deemed "inappropriate" for X crowd.... like a friendly heads up.

its not a censor but at least you keep crowd control

in the end... Id say freedom of speech.... BUT in control of content as apparently people nowadays tend to take the internets too seriously

internet dont belong to any government institution. if they want to censure something star somewhere else,, but internet is the last place where they have right to do such stupid thing. star by regulations and rules in schools,

I agree government should not be able to censor the internet. Doing so does break our freedom of speech on certain topics. But it is also true that there are certain things that should not go onto the internet. But if this is the topic over the recent bill about the government "taking over" internet regulations then I say, hell no!

It is called the World Wide Web, it is supposed to connect the world. If you regulate it like the government wants to then I don't think it would be so world like, nor wide.

I not agree with the government trying to censor the Internet 1.it would be really hard to watch porn 2.i like to write music over instrumentals sometimes and if I were to post a video of it on YouTube I would have to answer to Johnny law.alot of upcoming musicians are found through YouTube. I vote option 2. Simply stating because is the government does not have the right to make any changes to anything that may cause conflict with the Freedom Of Speech. The government should only be concerned with politics and world affairs, not little things like illegal stuff on the internet. Lots of things are illegal but hey people still do em, people will be people.
