No idea.... the only time I tried the game from a flash drive it was pretty slow.

The message you said ("connecting to the server please wait") is shown when you are receiving your character preview data and other stuff...
It definitely is not a "loop", so it must be the game running pretty slow on that....

Have you tried in a PC?

Alright, so I tried updating my wine to the latest version, but doing so removed the ability to configure a virtual desktop and I couldn't get it back. The game was running at the menu with no starting lag, which was happening on the older version. It was still doing the endless connection loop after leaving the patch screen even with the new version. Since I was unable to configure anything, I went back to the old version and tries various things. I reinstalled the game, changed permissions for what I could since some wouldn't work, and even tried running the launcher as a .exe and not through wine. Nothing worked. The launcher won't even start using wine. So I'm at a loss here.

I don't think it has to do with the Launcher not starting (although you will be missing certain stuff because of that).

What do you mean exactly with loop of connecting?
Right after you are done with the updates, when selecting the character, selecting the ship?

Right after I press start game, and I get the patch screen and press enter. It just never stops trying to connect. I assumed it was a network problem, since there was an issue with my network, but even after fixing the network it was still endlessly trying to connect.

  3. 1: Any class is good as long as you enjoy it. In fact, there is way more diversity in what you can do other than "melee does melee" and "ranged does ranged" and "magic does magic". You can have a ranger that goes up and fires some shots then moves in close range for the kill, or a hunter that uses a rifle to pick farther enemies off. A FO can even do melee using shifta/deband and a ranger can be a great help to any party with those spells as well. When it comes to endgame, HU are extremely versatile, giving you a lot of range options. I personally use a rare mechgun and the Sealed-J Sword/pair of sick rare daggers.

2: Again, it is entirely up to you. Some parties like certain gear, much like raids in other games, so for multi-target I would suggest either a halberd or sword, and ranged would be whatever you want as long as it isn't a pitiful handgun. Black Raven is fine though, it's a 3-shot handgun. Slicers are good too, because they penetrate through lines of enemies. I personally use a HUcast and RAmar, while having some FO for mag leveling. HUcast, by the way, are the strongest in terms of melee, yet their downside is I believe lower hit chance, and the inability to use techs.

3: You will progress at a rate of x3 exp to....125? 175? And it becomes x2 from then to lvl 200. And you can totally level on your own at a decent speed, but farming ttf with a group of 4 on hard mode is probably the best way to reach a high level, then farm it in very hard, then farm it on ultimate. By my knowledge that works out, at least. Haven't reached Ultimate yet so I can't speak for those at that level.

4: There are a lot of items that are only obtainable through the japanese version, download quests, or specific holiday events that I don't believe the server has implemented. There are custom server weapons too, but I haven't found any yet to my knowledge. You still have a large array, so don't worry too much about that.

Just letting you know, my HUcast is currently at 106 and my RAmar is at 48. Been running HU for a long time ever since GC so I've got a bit of a handle on the matters. Leave the explanations of group dynamics and "best" weapons to the ones at ultimate and beyond though. I just go for whatever has orange numbers and that I like.

Well the most important thing to look at would be the processor, which is listed as Intel Celeron Processor N2840 on the link you posted. That *should* be good enough to run the game without any major issues from what I can see (it's listed at 2.17GHz normally and capable to overclock to 2.58).

Sweet! I'm terrible at comparing processors to what is required for games that either run on emulator or are updated ports of older games, so I appreciate the help. I'll get to following the Linux instructions when I can, and hopefully, I can have PSO on the go.

  5. Hot damn, I haven't seen a reply to this thread in ages. But hey, I'm gonna contribute to it as well with a question.

I want to get the game running on linux, which I have successfully done before using wine. However, the laptop I was using shat itself, and now it won't work. My only other laptop is a toshiba chromebook. Will PSOBB run well on it? I can get games like Binding of Isaac to run as long as I turn off V-sync or whatever it was that I turned off, and PSO isn't that intensive. But will it run?

Oh man, you're lucky. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how I'm supposed to get this running. It's not a virtual machine running Ubuntu on my end, it's the actual software, so I'm unsure if it's different from the instructions given on the patch page in github.

  7. Yo! Not sure if I'm even remembered, but I was that dude that used to play on Ultima, was a chill mang who's alts were named something around Zeromir or Zer0. I stopped playing as I had to focus a lot on school, and I got a laptop working that has Ubuntu on it. I'm curious as to whether this patch can work on Ubuntu, and if it can, a really quick tutorial/run-down on how to get it working would be much appreciated. I'm totally terrible at coding things and using Linux cmd and Wine, as it took me about three days to get a simple tutorial on installing a WoW Vanilla server correctly.

Also, yes, post is a bit old, but I've been looking everywhere. Good to know fellow Ultima players want Linux!

  8. I want to be a delicious cupcake. With butterscotch frosting. I don't mind cinnamon though.

(If you get the reference, 1000 brownie points! :D)

Lv 103 HuCast with some alts named Zeromir

  9. I worked hard to play Hard mode in PSO, and eventually I did it. I thought it wouldn't be that hard to do Falz again in TTF on Hard. When I got there, I guess I took him for Grants-ed.

  10. Okay, so I was dicking around with Akinator, and I decided to have a go and try and get him to say Dark Falz. I figured "Hey, nobody would've added that in". The first answer I got was Alysrazor from WoW. I said it was wrong, and continued. Akinator ended up getting Dark Falz in the end. I am so happy right now you have no idea.

EDIT: Gonna go for Olga Flow now. Wish me luck
