Tips for becoming a better player

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I've been apart of this server since 2014 which seems like forever ago but I have learned a ton along the way. Not only have I learned plenty about the server and the norms of it but I have also developed into a much better player in general.

If I am being honest though I am a person that believes there is always room for improvement whether that be becoming a better hunter or learning how to accumulate a larger wealth on the server. I would love to hear any tips you guys may have to offer on how I can become a better, more well-rounded player and I'm sure for newer players looking at this topic it would be very useful as well. So have at it. Give me all the best tricks and tips you have learned over the years that have made you a better player, a better hunter, and a better community member in Phantasy Star.

Thanks in advance for your input!

A huge thing I learned to do is always attack something different than someone else. If someone is attacking a certain mob, then don't attack it and attack something else. This is mostly due to DMC (Damage Cancel). Basically if too people attack a mob at the same time, one of the damages will get cancelled out. This is why tech spamming and Divine Punishment are generally frowned upon to use.

Also I know you probably don't do it, but for everyone else reading this that has a DM

DON'T DM SPAM. Please use other weapons where applicable.

I'll edit this if I can think of more things to add. I'm sure there's smaller things you could do to improve your skills but this is probably a pretty big one.

Make new accounts and tell people you're new to server so they give you items.

When green names is on its a great way to farm materials (either for use or trade).  This is especially useful early on as it is done on normal mode ep1.

When playing with other Casts, figure out what traps they're using and try not to counter the status. If they're using freeze traps, don't spam confuse traps.

If someone is a DF spammer and they ask you not to resta, that means use star atomizers.

Bro i could remember a ROCT where you really annoyed me xD (i think it was probably just desync)

you always attacked the same mob as i did xD (funniest moment. i attacked a mob, at the same time you attacked it, i stopped the combo to avoid DMC, i took another mob and it seemed you had the same idea like me xD)

na jokin by the way.

THIS IS SOMETHING EVERYONE OF NEW MEMBER HAS TO READ! i just had a CCA last time with a ramar and his MM (if thats the one who has divine punishment too) he was only dealing 20-30 dmg per hit box. while i was doing 500+ dmg on lets say 80% of all hitboxes (there are some you cant hit with DM special) the same is for forces and their techs..

pls use gifoie/zalure/twin blaze special to tag Bosses like gal at beginning of the battle.

This was kinda frustrating to see with the Enemy HP reader Tool. i saw how many dmg he always dmc'd and it let Gal 2 times land before he died (i could have killed Gal in the air before even landing..)

What i also noticed due to solys hp reader: doesnt matter how many hit boxes a boss has. if someone deals lets say 2k dmg with an attack and you attack another hitbox than your friend with the 2k dmg does you can still dmc him :P which is annoying as hell but thats how it is (but thats avoidable)

I think one of the most important things is to be observant. It can be very easy to just walk mindlessly through rooms and smack things as they walk up to you, but if you really want to learn, then watch and pay attention as much as possible.
Watch how enemies react to your positionings and your various actions, and learn their ai patterns (How many people know what causes bringers to charge their laser? What causes sinows to flinch and uncloak? The exact size/angle of delsabers' jump attack hitbox? Which player gibbles will target? What kinds of attacks you should to do stay above ill gill hp triggers that change their ai, while still being able to finish them off after? etc.). Watch how many attacks it will take you to kill enemies. Watch how you control their animations with different timings and different attack combos. Watch how you have to move to dodge attacks. Watch how spawns are laid out, where enemies start, when they appear, what triggers cause them, etc. Watch your own character to see how your attacks come out, when you can start queueing up more actions, when you are free to start moving again after not only different weapons, but also different levels of combo attack with them, how long it takes to get to running speed, at what point in your attack does your character step forward, how much actual reach do the attacks have and what the targeting angles are like, how long you can delay your combos in between attacks, how cancelling attacks or dropping targeting affects these things. Watch how your teammates move and react to things in the room (remember, you don't always see the same things as them, which means knowing how monster ai works is very important to understanding your teammates' current situation). Even little things can make a difference like watching how unlocking doors act based on your position (being pressed up against a door keeps you stuck against a wall longer; it's significantly slower than running into it as it unlocks which not only allows you to start at higher speed, but you also get through the invisible wall itself much faster).
PSO has a very heavy focus on action more than rpg, and it's the many small details that really inform your approach and allow you to play skillfully (challenge mode is especially good for teaching many of these details to players, and is a good test for separating out the scrubs from the experts). It's things like good timing, precise movement, understanding enemies, understanding yourself, and all the other nuances to the game that are required for high level play.

@Eres Yes. Also use a Racast on that DM, dual log a Fomarl for the support, wear your damn STA and don't forget... the best spot for shooting is in the corners (might use Arrest Needle once in a while if foes are too sturdy just spam DM). Also since you're a mighty racast, you have freeze traps and it's useful but don't mind it because you have DM.
