Shiida's post is on point. I also sometimes help with redeems (although I don't do it in game). Regarding developers (which I guess is what I can give input with), I don't have much to say but I'd like to point out a few things I know there is people that are interested in helping on this area but have no experience and that's makes things complicated. There is also the need of allowing access to the source code and/or servers, which is a very sensitive thing, an someone with malicious intent could make things go very bad (not saying most people would, but can't just ignore that possibility). Another thing is, regarding source code, if someone really wanted to fix something in the game, they can do that without having access to ultima's source code (here, I am mostly talking about the game, for example the bringers issue, but keep in mind ultima is still based on tethealla) and share the changes they did with us (that'd definitely be a good application to be a developer).
